Chapter 18. Designing, Configuring, and Troubleshooting Multiprotocols over ATM

Introduction

This chapter discusses the methods of transferring legacy protocols over ATM.

Protocols such as IP, IPX, SNA, and so on have long been ported over WAN media such as Frame Relay and SMDS. ATM allows these protocols to be ported over campuses, as well as over WAN connections. Design considerations must be looked at, however, before choosing one method over another. Usually, Multiprotocols over ATM with AAL5 (RFC 1483) is used over WAN connections, and LANE is used over a campus ATM backbone.
