Other Network Layer Features
The TCP/IP network layer defines many functions beyond the function defined by the IPv4 protocol. Sure, IPv4 plays a huge role in networking today, defining IP addressing and IP routing. However, other protocols and standards, defined in other RFCs, play an important role for network layer functions as well. For example, routing protocols like OSPF exist as separate protocols, defined in separate RFCs.
This last short section of the chapter introduces three other network layer features that should be helpful to you when reading through the rest of this book.
