The globalized food market on occasion comes with a price to human health. A recent example was the epidemic of melamine poisoning in China, which affected more than 294 000 children, who suffered from urinary tract stones. At the end of September 2008 China’s Ministry of Health made an official announcement that all affected milk powder batches had been discarded. At the same time the UN issued a worldwide alert, after which 31 countries in Asia, South America and Africa banned imports of Chinese milk products. ...
