Mounting an effective response to an outbreak of viral disease involving street food vendors in Indonesia

D. Orlando, Dennis, M. Suci Hardianti and F.M.C. Sigit Setyabudi,     Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia

Abstract:

This chapter focuses on the viral agents of hepatitis, especially foodborne transmission of hepatitis A virus (HAV). A recent outbreak (2008) due to the unhygienic practices of food stall personnel and street vendors is discussed. An overview of the actions taken to control the outbreak and prevent another occurrence is presented. The case can be used as an integrated model for the development of recommendations to control and prevent similar foodborne viral disease outbreaks in developing countries.
