GUIDELINE 5

DISENTANGLE THE MICROMANAGER

Always set a day and time for a “next meeting” with your manager. If the manager tries to get tangled up in your work, take this simple approach:

1.   Remind the manager of the assignment you are working on (the tangible results and your specific deadline) and show your plan from Guideline 1.

2.   If your manager persists in trying to micromanage, remind him or her of the meeting you already have scheduled to review progress on the assignment.

It may take time for you to establish an appropriate distance between you and your manager, but if you are patient, this approach will usually give you some space.
