AE

Automatic Exposure. A general-purpose shooting mode where the camera automatically sets the aperture and shutter speed using its metered reading. On some cameras, the ISO settings are also automatically set.

AE Lock

Automatic Exposure Lock. A camera setting that allows you to lock the current exposure setting prior to taking a photo. After the exposure is locked, you can recompose the image and shoot.

AF Lock

Autofocus Lock. A camera setting that allows you to lock the focus on a subject prior to taking a photo. After the focus is locked, you can recompose the image and shoot without the focus changing.

AF-assist beam

In low light and low contrast shooting situations, the AF (autofocus) assist beam automatically illuminates to aid the camera's autofocus system to focus properly in poor light.

AiAF

Artificial Intelligence Autofocus. A focusing system based on evaluating objects in the scene.

ambient light

The natural or artificial light within a scene. Also called available light.

angle of view

The amount or area seen by a lens or viewfinder, measured in degrees. Shorter or wide-angle lenses and zoom settings have a greater angle of view. Longer or telephoto lenses and zoom settings have a narrower angle of view.

aperture

Also referred to as the diaphragm or f-stop setting of the lens. The aperture controls the amount of light allowed to enter through the camera lens. The higher the f-stop number setting, the smaller the aperture opening on the lens. Larger f-stop settings are selected ...
