6.10. ASSIGNMENT

Exploring the Same Subject with Different Lenses

In this assignment, use the most extreme ranges your lenses can manage and shoot two frames of the same subject. For example, if you have an EF 20mm wide-angle lens and an EF 70mm-300mm zoom telephoto lens, you'll be shooting one image of the same subject at 20mm and another at 300mm.

Select a small subject that is stable and nonmoving, such as a plant, something in your yard, or an element of a building. It can be almost anything so long as you can replicate the photo while you change lenses and move around. Then get ready to shoot the object at close range with the widest angle your lens collection has to offer.

Download the two images to your computer. What are the differences that you see between these images? Are there any? Is the depth of field different? Does the telephoto image seem more compressed than the wide-angle shot? Post the images and list the lenses or lens settings used. Also include which image you prefer and why. For the left image I used an EF 70-200mm f/2.8L lens at a focal length of 200mm." The image on the right was taken with an EF 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at a focal length of 24mm. Both shots were taken at 1/250 second at f/8, ISO 250.
