Functions of one variable

This chapter introduces the notion of a function and the techniques of differentiation required for the analysis of functions of one variable. Standard functions are built up from elementary functions and their properties explored. This material is vital for nearly everything which follows in this book. Although some of it is revision, there is much that may be new, like the account of inverse functions, the use of Taylor’s theorem and conic sections.
