CHAPTER 32

Structuring Investments in CTAs*

This chapter outlines a process often used by investors to identify and analyze individual managed futures traders. The discussion is not meant to be comprehensive, but rather to highlight certain steps and issues common to the process. In addition, the chapter examines the potential benefits of adding commodity trading advisers (CTAs) to portfolios of traditional and alternative assets, the issues related to investing in a single CTA rather than a portfolio of CTAs, and four different methods for investing in CTAs. Finally, it discusses the potential costs associated with actively managing a portfolio consisting of CTAs or other active managers.
