This chapter provides an extensive introduction to optimization. It explains the definitions and jargon used and clarifies why it is so important to know when and how to optimize software. Often the term optimization is associated with performance enhancements only; however, the amount of memory and other resources an application claims is important to minimize also. Both performance and footprint optimizations are discussed in this chapter.
