IMPETUS FOR THE GROWTH OF CORPORATE GOVERNANCE IN INDIA

Although corporate governance has been slow in making its mark in India, the next few years will see a flurry of activity. This will be driven by several factors:

  1. Competition-driven: Most important is the force of competition. With the dismantling of licences and controls, reduction of import tariffs and quotas, virtual elimination of public sector reservations, and a much more liberalized regime for foreign direct and portfolio investments, Indian companies have faced more competition in the second half of the 1990s than they did since Independence.
