111. How to Bite the Bullet

I’ve been asked several times in my career, “I’m starting to feel like I want to quit my job and try freelancing full-time. How do you know when it is time to bite the bullet and do it?”

When I started my freelance career, I didn’t have any other options. During 2002 when I bit the bullet, the economy was still struggling to pull out of the dot bomb and post-9/11 woes. Our group at Fox had been sold to Disney, and hundreds of people were laid off in the transition, including myself. Freelancing was my only real choice, and fortunately I had a couple key relationships with individuals in decision-making positions who were feeding me enough work to get by.
