86. How to Flush Out a Budget

Proposals can take a lot of time to create, and if you don’t land the project you will never be reimbursed for that time and effort. Asking a client for a budget is sometimes risky; they may think that if they tell you their budget, you will just charge them that price whether the project should cost that much or not. (And in some cases they may be right.)

The problem is that if you don’t have a price range from the client, you are bidding blind. You don’t know if they want to buy a gourmet meal or a fast-food hamburger. Many people don’t have any idea of the time and cost of graphic design. They may be thinking that the website they want to create will cost around $1,000 when in reality their request will cost $10,000. ...
