77. You Have 65 Seconds to Land a Job

A design student at a local university approached me once and asked for some tips. This student was graduating soon and was preparing to begin spamming out résumés. We receive an enormous amount of resumes from people wanting to work at our agency. I offered the student a little advice on our unofficial process: You have about 65 seconds to land a job.

1st: We skim the email letter; hopefully it is custom written for our agency. (Takes about 5 seconds.)

If the candidate passes that...

2nd: We look at the résumé; hopefully we will find a PDF attached. Is it nicely designed? Is there a custom logo? Did they pay attention to typography? (Takes about 10 seconds.)
