68. Assume That People Are Clueless

One of the best things a designer can do is assume that people are clueless. And for the most part, in this context the clueless people are your clients. Now I am not positing that your clients are literally mindless morons—chances are they are very intelligent and successful business people. However, graphic designers often err by assuming that their clients know way more than they do about what the heck is going on regarding the design process and their role in it. Assumptions are frequently made that your clients understand how to give feedback, what they are looking at, what is coming next in the project, and so forth; these assumptions are usually way off base.
