20. Live as a Team, Die as a Team

About five years after starting my design agency, I became acutely aware of the codependent nature of a business. Perhaps these feelings began to swell when we held our first annual company party at the local amusement park, Lagoon. Each employee, with his or her family in tow, met at our rented pavilion for lunch. This was the first time we had all been together in such a manner. I began to count heads and was humbled as I felt the weight of running my business in a way that could continue to provide for all 52 people who were dependent on it for their financial support (my dozen employees plus their spouses and children).
