18. Don’t Work in a Vacuum

“Don’t work in a vacuum.” Of course I didn’t coin the phrase, but when I first started spreading this statement around the office, I honestly had some people think that I was talking about a vacuum cleaner. Don’t be fooled, though—what I want you to be thinking about is space: the final frontier. Most of us have seen a movie where some guy gets sucked out of his spaceship into outer space. His love interest is inside the ship with no way to save him. The soft, sad music is playing while they touch hands against the glass. She is crying. He is dying. He has no way to move, no way to speak, no way to breathe. He is completely alone in the vacuum of outer space.
