17. Toot Your Own Horn

Growing up on a lake in northern Indiana taught me many lessons. Among them is the universal truth that “crap naturally floats to the surface.” Inevitably, the top layer of the channels in the lake would contain many treasures such as dead fish, trash, and seaweed. Sure, the lake was filled with good stuff as well: beautiful bass and other fish swam beneath the surface. But the only time you saw them rise to the surface was when they were dead and rotting.
