15. The Value of Downtime

The day I graduated from college with my fancy bachelor’s degree in Studio Art was a happy one. Indiana University was wonderful...but I remember thinking with a smile on my face, “I will never be in school again.” Unhappily, it took about a month of job searching for me to realize that my degree didn’t guarantee me a job. I also realized my college portfolio and zero experience weren’t exactly “wowing” any potential employers. Finally, the day came when I landed my first “real” job: prepress coordinator at the local AlphaGraphics, making just a tad above minimum wage.
