E-mentoring for career development

Abstract:

This chapter discusses the role of mentoring in the LIS career and why mentoring is important. It provides an overview of how mentoring can benefit all librarians, especially the early-career librarian. The chapter discusses the new area of e-mentoring and describes some of the Web 2.0 technologies that can be used to facilitate an e-mentoring relationship. It focuses on informal e-mentoring, how to find a mentor online and strategies for initiating a mentoring relationship. The chapter also describes the characteristics of a successful mentoring relationship and provides some case-study examples of mentoring at work.
