Sending a Notification in an E-Mail Message When a Workflow Runs

In addition to creating documents (or list items) as you did in the previous exercise, you can also use workflows to perform many other actions, as indicated in the Workflow Actions list in the Workflow Designer. One of the most common actions is to send an e-mail message when an event occurs. For example, if a task is added to a task list and assigned to someone, that person can receive an e-mail notification. However, using the Workflow Designer to create an e-mail message with a richly formatted body is challenging. Doing so requires you to include HTML code directly in the body of the e-mail message that is generated by the workflow.
