Creating a SQL Data Source

Displaying SQL data presents a unique set of challenges, not just in SharePoint, but in server technologies in general. When the SQL server is not on the same physical machine with the Internet Information Services (IIS) you are using for your Web application, the Web page that is trying to display information from that SQL server will fail to authenticate. Briefly: the ASPX page "hops" to the IIS server and is authenticated there, but cannot then "hop" again to the SQL server to authenticate there.
