ActiveX/COM

ActiveX is Microsoft's answer to reusable components. ActiveX is built on Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM). COM is an infrastructure in which developers can build components, each in the language of their own choice, and share these objects with one another to build bigger and more complex systems. ActiveX is just the brand name associated with a subset of these technologies. One of the key features of COM is that ActiveX/COM components are reusable by any program in the system, not just Web-related ones. COM is very much a part of the operating system.
