Humankind has always been fascinated by labyrinths, and mythology is crowded with heroes busy finding their way out of mysterious buildings. It was not unusual for large European 18th- and 19th-century villas to have a hedge labyrinth in their gardens. Indeed, mazes of different varieties are still common in the amusement parks and games of our era.
