Barrier 1: Stereotyping

We give it a fancy name and call it stereotyping, but it is just plain old prejudice. Many team members come to a relationship or a potential relationship with preconceived notions about certain stakeholders. These stereotypes create barriers to effective, positive and useful business dealings.

Consider the stakeholders you have identified as critical to your success. How are they perceived by the members of your team? Here are some stereotypes we have encountered in various organizations.

Senior Management. “All they care about is the bottom line. They don't know what it's like out here in the real world.”

Functional Department Managers. “All they care about is meeting their personal objectives so they can get their bonus. ...
