We are still victims of some outmoded thinking about teams. Most of what we know about effective teamwork comes from the field of group dynamics. From group dynamics we learned most of what we know about member interactions, developing group harmony, reaching a consensus and group norms.

While this is all important information, it has resulted in a world of team building and team training programs that focus exclusively on improving interpersonal relationships and internal team dynamics. In addition, most of the books on effective teamwork and the guides for facilitators also emphasize activities that promote better internal team dynamics.
