An introduction to Android

Android is an open-source mobile platform based on Linux kernel and developed by Google Inc. It was primarily developed for smartphones but now exists in many variants including Android Wear, Android Auto, and Android TV. The open-source nature of this operating system leads it to be adopted by many multi-national companies like Samsung, HTC, LG and Sony etcetera for their smartphones. These smartphone manufacturers sometime write their own user interface over Android and call it a skin. For example, Samsung calls their UI "TouchWiz" and HTC call theirs "HTC Sense".
