Apple iBeacon

Just like Eddystone, Apple iBeacon is a beacon platform used for enabling location awareness for devices. The iOS device can then identify itself when it has entered beacon proximity. Unlike Eddystone, it is a closed implementation and native only to iOS users. The advertising packet for iBeacon consists of these four components:

  • UUID: Universally unique identifier
  • Major: Two-byte string to identify a group of beacons; similar to the namespace in Eddystone
  • Minor: Two-byte string to identify individual beacons; similar to an instance in Eddystone
  • Tx Power: Transmission Power
