Part IILEGO® SERIOUS PLAY®: The Science Platform

Part II of the book will present the scientific domains within the learning, psychology, and neighboring fields from which the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method grew, and in which we have found the insights that helped evolve the method and the understanding of how it creates results.

These results come from the participants' learning. In this book we several times talk about learning. In short, to us, learning simply means making sense of an experience and incorporating that experience into our own mental models of the world. This making sense is a fully creative activity. We must do it for ourselves; no one else can do it for us.

For example, when reading about flow in Chapter 8, you will go through such a learning experience and connect any new knowledge with what you already know and can relate to. We do not know what you already know and cannot make the connections for you. You are the sole builder of these connections.

However, before we dive further into the theories, it is important to stress that the LEGO SERIOUS PLAY method is not based on any new or groundbreaking science. Rather, as mentioned previously, it is the result of action research and evidence drawn from a variety of disciplines and proven research. Some of this was already firmly anchored inside the LEGO Company, and some emerged during the development and the implementation of LEGO SERIOUS PLAY.
