Although you might be unaware of this—or may have forgotten—but throughout this book we’ve actually been creating HTML5 documents. But that’s only because we’ve used the HTML5 doctype. In all other respects, we’ve been using HTML4 (or earlier) elements, and have been writing the markup in an XHTML syntax. This includes lowercase tags and attributes, quoted attributes, and symmetrical opening and closing HTML tags.
We’ve been steering clear of using some real, honest-to-goodness, brand-spanking new HTML5 elements, but that’s going to change in this chapter. I’ve also avoided covering some of the newer CSS features that people are making more use of in the world of web design, namely CSS3. ...
