Made famous to a new generation by its dramatic retelling in the 1995 film, the story of Apollo 13 was one of life or death decisions and actions under enormous pressure. As part of the US Apollo Space Program the flight left the Kennedy Space Center, Florida, on 11th April 1970 and was supposed to be the third of its manned crafts to actually land on the surface of the moon.

But what started out as simply another medium-sized step towards NASA's lunar ambitions, and an event that was barely noticed by the general public at the time, soon grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons.
