22.8. Applying the Balanced Scorecard to a School District

For a school district, the following objectives are created for each of the five categories shown on the next page. (Note the balanced scorecard categories can and should be adjusted to suit the specific needs of the organization.)

Financial Performance Objective:

  • Sound fiscal management

Customer Satisfaction Objectives:

  • Safe and enriching school environment

  • Parent satisfaction

  • Community involvement

Instructional and Administrative Processes Objectives:

  • Effective instruction

  • Safe and efficient transportation

  • Well-maintained facilities

Staff Learning and Growth Objectives:

  • Competent staff

  • Staff satisfaction

Student Achievement Objectives:

  • Student mastery of curriculum

  • Nationally competitive students

There are many different measures that can be used. Exhibit 22.11 illustrates some possible measures.
