I hope I have made the point by now that to connect with people, organizations must let people be themselves. I am not advocating a woolly and idealistic we’re one big happy family culture. There is too much diversity in businesses for that to ever occur. However, organizations that rely on formulas, lip service, or policy manuals to promote harmony, loyalty, and cohesion are doomed to fail. Such techniques simply will not capture the hearts and minds of the people. As Brazilian industrialist Ricardo Semler writes, They strip away freedom and give nothing in return but a false feeling of discipline and conformity.
So how can organizations, and the managers in them, connect more with their people?
