IS-IS NBMA Solutions in Switched WAN Networks

Integrated IS-IS recognizes three different types of WAN connections: point-to-point leased lines, dialup links, and switched WANs.

Point-to-Point WANs

This first category of WAN connection is usually a leased line solution between two ISs that exist on both sides of a HDLC or PPP circuit. In other words, IS-IS considers this an NBMA network with just two attached devices. A solitary IIH PDU is used to designate a Level 1, Level 2, or L1L2 adjacency on a point-to-point link. After adjacency is defined, the peers transmit CSNP (complete) packets detailing the contents of their link-state databases.
