Glossary of terms used in digital and multi-media broadcasting

Many terms vary from country to country and we have tried to be as universal as possible.

Acoustic screen A mobile screen covered in sound absorbing material which is used to shield a microphone from noise from another part of the studio, or to help ‘deaden’ a studio’s acoustics.

Actuality Interviews or sounds recorded on location.

Ad-lib Talking without a script, possibly from bullet points but in the main, improvised.

AGC Automatic Gain Control. Equipment which equalises the differences in volume, by automatically adjusting the levels to reduce dramatic changes.

Agency copy Story received from a news agency.
