The scope of applications

In the early days of psychometrics there was considerable emphasis on the use of special techniques for special jobs. Chapter 3 considered tests of mechanical comprehension for instance, and there was a time when batteries of tests with a special focus were commonly used. Many of these were aimed at shop floor jobs with measures including speed of hand–eye co-ordination. With changing patterns of work there has been less emphasis on such measures, though as seen in Chapter 3 again there are tests covering clerical and computer skills which are still quite commonly used.
