One of the winners of the UK Whitbread prize for literature is an American, James Shapiro, who claims that he hated Shakespeare at school but is now besotted with him. His book is called 1599 and tells the story of that one year in which William Shakespeare wrote, among other things, Henry V, Julius Caesar, As You Like It and Hamlet – not bad for one year’s output, not bad stories.
