My undergrad degree is in biology. I was even enrolled in a PhD program for molecular biology when I realized I needed a dramatic and risky career change. I was able to build enough skills to switch into sysadmin work during the dot-com boom of the late 01990s.

I had been working about two years as a sysadmin in Texas when I got my break to get into InfoSec. I had connections in DC through my existing job in Texas, which got my resume in front of my eventual boss who was looking for an assistant to do firewall admin and other work.
