To set the tone for a chapter on gathering company data, I thought it very appropriate to share the sentiments of one of the twentieth century’s most influential statisticians. W. Edwards Deming all but invented the U.S. Census process and almost single-handedly designed the efficient production and quality control models that revolutionized Japan’s global manufacturing capabilities in the 1970s. He achieved all this and more through a disciplined appreciation for what the numbers told him. Like Deming, value investors know that little can be accomplished without solid, reliable data.
