What Are Servlets?

Web sites and related Web-based applications often consist of a combination of static content (does not change) and dynamic content. Web servers are well suited for the presentation of static content in the form of HTML pages to an individual Web browser on request. In many Web applications and sites, there are requirements to display content customized for a particular user, a specific request, or to reflect changing information in a database.

Over the years, a number of techniques and methodologies have been developed using various technologies to provide the dynamic content alongside static content. One such technique has been the creation of the Servlet API as an extension to the Java language.
