IN MY CAREER, I’ve been fortunate to work with some wonderful CEOs, one of whom was Richard Fairbank at Capital One. Mr. Fairbank had a phrase that he used when talking with leaders throughout the company: “It’s not about you, it’s about them.” What he meant, of course, is that leadership is about the people you lead—in the end, it’s not about you. Which beg the questions: Is this how you look at leadership? Is this how you approach your role as a people manager? If not, what if you did see yourself as a servant leader? What would it change for you?
