Upgrading the Operating System

The choice of doing an OS upgrade versus doing a complete reinstallation will be determined by your application and the uptime requirements of the services hosted by the system.

In general, using Live Upgrade (LU) makes system upgrades a straightforward task with no downtime required other than the time needed to reboot into the upgraded boot environment. LU is recommended for upgrading systems, regardless of their use of a logical volume manager. LU also provides the rudiments of change control, including documentation of what changed and a back-out plan in case of unforeseen problems with the upgraded boot image.
