When physical or mental deterioration takes away the independence of older people, these seniors and their families are faced with a profound choice of either seeking institutionalized care or having care provided at home. Elders who require less help might find that an assisted-living facility adequately and comfortably meets their needs. But for others, the choice could come down to going to a nursing home or receiving care in their own home. Providing care at home can be costly if it is done entirely by hired professionals.
