Recruit Directors Who Build Value

For the new model of a board that leads to work, a new breed of executives and directors—or at the least, an altered mind-set among existing executives and directors—is required. Company executives must be able to actively collaborate with their directors, and they must be ready for directors to exercise leadership in areas that may have been the sole prerogative of management in the past. Directors, in turn, must bring not only a monitoring eye to the boardroom but also real content to the executive suite, and they must appreciate where and when to exercise full leadership, collaborative leadership, or no leadership at all.
