You will often need to use multiple information-gathering techniques to get a complete picture of the system you're working on. Here are some techniques you can use as you set out to gather the requirements:

Before the project is formalized:

  1. Conduct interviews and discussions with the performing organizations and stakeholders to determine their interpretations of the objective requirements and their inferences of any undocumented potential requirements. These discussions can be held on an individual basis, as a collective group, or as a group using a facilitator. Using group inputs results in a better product but takes a lot more time.

  2. Document the issues discovered during Step 1 above and discuss them with the customer. Validate as "requirement" ...
