At the beginning of the twentieth century, Franz Reichelt, an Austrian-born tailor who had become a French citizen, tried to devise a ‘parachute suit’ that he hoped would help to save the lives of early aviators if (or when) their flying machines got into trouble. The suit was a kind of voluminous cloak that, in principle, would open in mid-air and allow the falling aviator to glide safely to the ground, like Batman. Monsieur Reichelt insisted on demonstrating the effectiveness of the suit by jumping from the first platform of the Eiffel Tower (about 57 metres above the ground).
