Starting with a 3D primitive

In the default startup scene from Blender, you will already find a cube primitive ready to use, as you probably remember from the last chapter. What if you don't have a cube, or your idea will work better by starting with another primitive, such as a sphere?

To create new 3D primitives in Blender, you can use the Shift + A shortcut, or the Add menu at the top of your user interface. In both options, you will get a menu that shows a list of possible alternatives you can create. For subdivision modeling, you should always pick primitives from the Mesh group.
