Agar has been extracted in a variety of ways including dissolve agar from seaweeds in hot water and extract agar from agar solution (Figures 2-1 and 2-2). Most researchers believed that agar is composed with agarose and agaropectin.
Agarose is manufactured from agar (Figure 2-3).
Commercially alginates are produced by extraction from brown seaweeds such as Laminaria digitata, Laminaria hyperborea and Macrocystis pyrifera and from several bacteria such as the nitrogenfixing aerobe Azotobacter vinelandii and the opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa also produce alginate (Gorin and Spencer 1966, and Evans and Linker 1973 cited in [4]). ...
