Introduction
Most projects start because someone has an idea. Often, it’s an idea to develop a new product or service, update an existing product or service, or make some change to a part of the organization. From an organizational perspective, projects can be started based on strategy, the desire for operational efficiencies, or in reaction to some change in the environment. But projects can also be started when someone has enough influence to launch an effort that supposedly helps the organization but really furthers his or her own ends. These are often referred to as “pet projects,” and as much as organizations like to claim they don’t exist, they do.
