In the old paradigm, job security came from being a specialist. Knowing something that made you indispensable kept you safe from a round of layoffs, could be parlayed into a raise, and was a sort of corporate currency. And that being the case, who wouldn’t want to hold on to that knowledge and not share it with anyone else?

But today, job security—and beyond that, career security—comes from exactly the opposite direction. We put more value on those who are willing to spread knowledge and share it around with the team. Pairing, swarming, mobbing…these are all techniques to help bring people together, to help us get more done more efficiently and at a higher level of quality.
